![]() Gilmour and Ezrin noted that in doing so, they “restored the creative balance between the three Pink Floyd members.” The differences between the original stereo mix and the remix are quite noticeable, especially in classic songs like “Learning To Fly” and “Sorrow.” To my ears, it is a vast improvement over the original album. They ultimately chose to alter the album by restoring Wright’s keyboards and having Mason re-record some of the drum tracks. Gilmour, Ezrin, and original engineer Andy Jackson were not happy with the original mix and 80’s production style. The centerpiece of that set was the newly-remixed Momentary Lapse. Pink Floyd released their massive The Later Years box set in late 2019, covering all the band’s output from 1987 to 2014. Even though the band is augmented by several outside musicians (most notably Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera) and writers (Patrick Leonard, Anthony Moore, Jon Carin and co-producer Bob Ezrin), it still sounds like Pink Floyd. In many ways, the resulting album felt more like a proper Pink Floyd album than 1983’s The Final Cut, which is more reminiscent of a Roger Waters solo effort.Īlthough David Gilmour is clearly leading the way, Wright and drummer Nick Mason contribute much in the same way as they had in the past. He says the revisited album has a more "open" sound than the original studio version, more akin to how it was presented live on tour. Mason conceded that the idea of "re-assembling" a near 35-year-old album is a bit unconventional, but he asserted that the public these days has an "appetite for alternate views of the same work." While going through the original tracks, the band uncovered unused keyboard parts from Wright which helped create "a new vibe, a new feeling for the album." In a press release, Gilmour said that the idea of updating the album "to make it more timeless" came up years ago. Together with engineer Andy Jackson, Gilmour revisited some of Richard Wright's original keyboard takes and Mason recorded new drum tracks to restore a "better creative balance between the three Pink Floyd members." The band explained in a press release that its The Later Years project in 2019 gave surviving members David Gilmour and Nick Mason a "fresh overview" of the album. It will also be presented in 360 Reality Audio for those looking for a more "immersive experience." The album will be available in physical and digital formats on October 29.
